Two Modern Gypsies

Füssen – Our first meeting with the Alps

There are so many stunning pictures of the Neuschwanstein Castle (in South of Germany) on Instagram. We decided to go there to see it ourselves and spend a few days in Füssen on our way to Innsbruck. A beautiful place, but unfortunately we were a bit unlucky with the weather and full campsites. We ended up paying a lot for watching the fog and walk in the rain.

We arrived on a Friday afternoon after driving in a lot of rain, but when we parked, just as we ordered, it stopped raining. The campsite we stayed at wasn’t too far from the two castles, Neuschwanstein and Schloss Hohenschwangau, so we went for a run in the evening to have a look. We’re really glad we did that now, since the next days was just non stop super heavy rain. This evening was the only time we was able to see it.

Can you see the castle?;)

The next day we drove the car to the parking where you can start the hike to the castle in hope to get up there. The castle was covered in fog and it was raining heavily. Therefore, we decided to take a trip into the town, Füssen, instead.

Füssen is a small and nice town, and it looks just like what we imagine a town in the Alps would look like. After walking around in the rain for a while, Smula was cold and we wanted to do something else. It seams like wherever you are in Germany, you’re not far from a climbing gym. Just 10 minutes outside the town we found Kletterzentrum DAV Füssen, so we went climbing there instead of walking in the rain. The day was finished off whit tacos and beer.

The weather forecast for the upcoming days was just rain, so we decided to drive to Innsbruck the next day and make camp there instead. The campsite we stayed at in Füssen was also the most expensive we have stayed at so far, so it didn’t make sense to stay any longer and pay for an overpriced place in the rain.

Füssen is a beautiful place which we definitely recommend, but be aware that it’s a lot off tourists all year around. Be smart and book a place to stay before you go! Then maybe you don’t end up paying 20 Euros extra because the cheeper places are full, like we had to.

Luckily we had a large umbrella. Smula weren’t that happy though, he should have his own umbrella for dogs.

Yeeey. We found a climbing gym.

Camping Bannwaldsee

  • Large
  • Good location – close to the castles, Füssen town, lots of hiking possibilities
  • Clean
  • Expensive!
  • Friendly staff
  • Electricity – pay for what you use plus a start fee per day at 2 Euros

For us, this campsite was a bit too expensive. But if you plan to stay here for a while as your only vacation it might feel different. This is a great place for kids and families, and for those who prefer high standard.
