Bouldering world cup

Bouldering World Cup Munich, Climbing & Shopping

After ten good days in Czeck it was time to once again pack all our stuff and take the mother ship back to Germany. This time heading to Munich to watch the last Bouldering World Cup live. Pretty stoked you can say! We liked Munich a lot, this outdoor/sporty city suits us perfectly and we’re definitely going back! Maybe already to the Bouldering World Cup 2019 (In May).

We arrived at the campsite, Obermenzig Munich Friday afternoon and kept our Friday dinner tradition with tacos alive. (In case you are Norwegian and wonder; Yes we brought “tacokrydder” from Norway).

Bouldering World Cup Munich

The next morning we went to the Olympic Stadium and watched the semi finals. We had to leave Smula alone in the caravan, therefore we hurried back to him in-between the semi finals and the finals. We had a long walk with him, ate some dinner and headed back to the stadium again for the finals.

We have never been to an international climbing event before. It was cool to see this level of climbing live after watching all the previous world cups on IFSC’s Livestreams on YouTube. Not to mention, being in a crowd this enthusiastic! We were told that the competition in Munich is known for being crowded and loud, which we can confirm. It’s so much fun.

A little tip though, if you want to go to this event, buy the seating tickets! Unfortunately we were too late when we ordered tickets for the event. It was hot, crowded, and a little bit difficult to see everything on the floor at all times. Have to admit that we were a little bit jealous on our German friends, Maren and Markus with the nice tribune seats (a couple we met while bouldering in Czech). Nevertheless, we were lucky and got some nice spots in front after the break. Happy wife, happy life!

Our conclusion is that we have to do more of this!

Climbing

It was truly motivating to watch all the strong climbers in the World Cup, therefore we just had to go climbing ourselves the next day. We went to the DAV Kletter- und Boulderzentrum München-Nord with Maren and Markus. This gym was really nice, and huge compared to what we are used to back home. We liked all the routes we climbed and the bouldering section. The Germans really knows how to make awesome climbing gyms!

Exploring Munich, in different ways

On our last day in Munich we decided to go to the city centre for some sightseeing and shopping. Miriam really needed a new pair of climbing shoes, and ended up buying two new pairs. Munich is an outdoor paradise. It’s so many «sports activities» to do and you would find whatever you are looking for in one of the many shops here. Not surprising the ISPO expo is here. Not surprising we like Munich this much either.

Smula have had some problems with his eye so we also had to visit the vet that afternoon. We found one close to the camp site and Maren (who is German) called the vet for us and booked an appointment. It was nice to get help from someone who speaks the language. Luckily it wasn’t something seriously, he got a cream for his eye and hopefully he will be in perfect shape in a few days.

Camping Obermenzig Munich

  • Close to the city center (approximately 10 km). Nice roads (for bicycles) all the way into the city center and the Olympic park. Bike is recommended, its very busy in the city centre and it looks difficult to find parking.
  • The camping pitches are nice and private.
  • The facilities are ok (not our favorite), but everything you need is here.
  • You have to pay for wifi, it doesn’t cost much but it wasn’t very good either.
  • This is a good campsite if you want to go into the city (especially without a car) – take the bikes or use the bus, it’s just outside the campsite.
  • For us, with dog and caravan, the price was 30 Euros during high season.
